Join us this world environment day on saving sola beel webinar (your opinion matters) Register here: https://linktr.ee/InsideOutIndia “Sola beel” a word you would most likely be unfamiliar with,so what is this sola beel, why should we even care about it? Two patches of wetlands situated in the heart of the city, “yes you heard that right a wetland amidst our Guwahati city” spread out in an area of around 2kms The wetland on the western side is called Sarusola beel, and the one on the eastern side is Barsola Beel. The Barsola beel is the largest lake in the city of Guwahati and is connected with number of drains at various locations through secondary and tertiary drain, though majority of discharge received through the culvert near Nepali Mandir. Chandmari Drain, Rehabari Drain and connecting combined sewage drains from surrounding areas outfalls into the Beel. For Sarusola beel the majority of discharge is received from south near KC Das Commerce College. Drains coming from Athgaon, Chatribari, Tokabari and surrounding areas and connecting combined sewage drains from surrounding areas outfalls into the Beel. These urban water bodies were once the habitat for a large number of flora and fauna which has now almost vanished due to degradation and encroachment activities. Many endangered species of birds have been spotted by us in the recent research of the site and also by speaking to the locals we came to know that the area once had a lot of fish, the population of which has suffered now as well as the wild growth of water hyacinth blocking the entire fishing process. These wetlands are the storm water reservoirs and can help reduce flash floods of the city and also acts as a ground water recharge units for a the city, reeling under ever depleting ground water. So on the occasion of this world environment day with the theme of ecosystem restoration let’s unite with a mission of rejuvenating both the wetlands and garnering mass appeal to save these urban wetlands for degradation and encroachments.
