ABOUT
SAVING SOLA BEEL
SAVING
SOLA BEEL.
Sola beel is collectively referred to, two patches of wetlands situated at the city center of Guwahati. The two wetlands are separated from each other by settlements in between. The wetland on the western side is called Sarusola beel (26.175151°, 91.742947°), and the one on the eastern side is Barsola Beel (26.174290°, 91.746891°). The wetland area of Sarusola beel is around 28,000 sq. meters and that of Barsola Beel is around 75,000 sq meters. Both of these water bodies are situated near the Paltanbazar area
The Barsola beel is the largest lake in the city of Guwahati and is connected with a number of drains at various locations through the secondary and tertiary drains, though majority of discharge received through the culvert near Nepali Mandir. Chandmari Drain, Rehabari Drain, and connecting combined sewage drains from surrounding areas outfalls into the Beel.
For Sarusola beel the majority of discharge is received from the south near KC Das Commerce College. Drains coming from Athgaon, Chatribari, Tokabari, and surrounding areas and connecting combined sewage drains from surrounding areas outfalls into the Beel.
These urban water bodies were once the habitat for a large number of flora and fauna which has now almost vanished due to degradation and encroachment activities. These wetlands are stormwater reservoirs and can help reduce flash floods of the city and also acts as groundwater recharge units for a city, reeling under
ever depleting groundwater.
MISSION.
The main objective of the mission is to rejuvenate both the wetlands and garner mass appeal to save these urban wetlands for degradation and encroachments
